“What is the ASVAB time limit?” is a question that you might’ve asked your military recruiter, test site manager or high school counselor.
How many of you ended up getting blank stares or “I don’t really know, I’ll have to ask someone” type of answers?
If you’re anything like me, I despise timed tests. I always freak out, get nervous, or worse, I get flustered and end up doing poorly. This is because I didn’t properly prepare myself for the different time limits.
If I would know going in how much time I had for each section of a test, chances are I would be a whole lot more confident. Especially if I used the practice tests to see how I would do timed.

First, we will cover the computerized version of the ASVAB.
Computer Version ASVAB Time Limit
- General Science (GS) 16 Questions 8 Minutes
- Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) 16 Questions 39 Minutes
- Word Knowledge (WK) 16 Questions 8 Minutes
- Paragraph Comprehension (PC) 11 Questions 22 Minutes
- Math Knowledge (MK) 16 Questions 20 Minutes
- Electronic Information (EI) 16 Questions 8 Minutes
- Auto Information (AI) 11 Questions 7 Minutes
- Shop Information (SI) 11 Questions 6 Minutes
- Mechanical Comprehension (MC) 16 Questions 20 Minutes
- Assembling Objects (AO) 16 Questions 16 Minutes
So you can see that on the computerized version of the ASVAB, you’ll have no more than 16 questions on any given part. The longest section gives you 39 minutes (Arithmetic Reasoning) and the quickest time limit is 6 minutes (Shop Information).
There are 5 sections where you will have to average answering a question every 30 seconds are less. Those sections are in bold.
Pencil and Paper ASVAB Time Limit

- Word Knowledge (WK) 35 Questions 11 Minutes
- Paragraph Comprehension (PC) 15 Questions 13 Minutes
- Math Knowledge (MK) 25 Questions 24 Minutes
- Electronic Information (EI) 20 Questions 9 Minutes
- Auto/Shop Information (AI) 25 Questions 11 Minutes
- Mechanical Comprehension (MC) 25 Questions 19 Minutes
- Assembling Objects (AO) 25 Questions 15 Minutes
The pencil and paper version is a little different. They combine the Auto and Shop information into 1 sub-test. I put the sections that you’ll be crunched for time in bold.
On average, the computerized version has 14.5 questions per section on whereas the pencil and paper version averages 25 questions per section.
The time limit on the computerized version averages about 15 minutes per section and the pencil and paper version is about 16.5 minutes per section.
